About The Artwork

I painted this (and some others) during a tumultuous time. A COVID time. This series of paintings were meditations. They were daydreams. They are an attempt to capture a snapshot of how I wanted to feel: calm in the face of upheaval and change; gratitude, even in the face of certain loss; excitement and hope for the very uncertain future. The figure in each painting is alone in a surrealist style, mostly empty environment, representative of the weirdness and loneliness of isolation during lockdown. There is a foreboding, an uncertainty; like a storm approaching. The brighter colors and abstract flourishes are hopeful and even playful - which is the marvel of the human spirit. The figure is not facing us, but away. She is not interacting with us, not looking at us. She is looking inward, tending to herself.

It's all in the shapes and details for me. I love and use a variety of media, including charcoal, markers, liners and water colours. I have always been drawing, for just about as long as I can remember. From illustrations of whimsical dreamscapes and fantastical creatures to explorations of the human form. It's shape, movement and texture that excites me. I attended a small art collage in my home town for three years, where I studied both fine art and graphic design. I have been working in design for the most part since then and have been fortunate enough to do quite a lot of traveling in Africa and South East Asia. My head is always full of images, jostling to escape onto the page. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, I always have a pencil in my hair and a sketch book at the ready.
