About The Artwork

This painting combines the Maghrabi script and Hebrew language to depict Surah 19, which features the Haroof-e-Muqataat or disjointed letters, comprising the letters Kaf, Ha, Ya, Ain, and Suad. The Haroof-e-Muqataat form the opening verses of 29 surahs of the Noble Quran and are significant because, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, whoever recites a letter from Allah’s Book, receives the reward for it and ten the like of it. The painting captures the beauty of the Muqataat, which are typically represented by isolated letters at the start of each surah, with the Maghrabi script flowing across the canvas and the Hebrew text providing a complementary design element. The use of acrylic paint, Winsor & Newton Acrylic Paints, gesso, and a Winsor & Newton Gloss Varnish enhances the vibrancy and texture of the artwork. The artist has chosen the medium, subject matter, and style carefully to create a unique and meaningful artwork that speaks to the importance of the Haroof-e-Muqataat in the Islamic tradition. The Hebrew language incorporated into the painting adds an extra dimension to the piece, reflecting the shared roots and connections between Islam and Judaism. By bringing together diverse elements in a single painting, this artwork serves as a visual representation of the beauty of Islamic calligraphy and the rich spiritual traditions of Islam. It is a testament to the timeless appeal and enduring significance of the Quranic message and the power of art to convey complex ideas and emotions.

Instagram: @paintings_by_noor I had the good fortune to travel all across the Middle East and Europe, meeting people from various walks of life. My name is Mahmood Noor Zafar, I was born in 1956 in Peshawar, Pakistan, and I currently live in London. I have been able to convey my multicultural ideas and engage with many arts and genres because of my ability to speak, read, and write German, English, and Urdu at a native level. My mother's enthusiasm for my artistic ability inspired me to begin my creative path and she gave me a lot of her wisdom and intuition in the process. Following that passion throughout my life, with a particular focus on Islamic art and culture, made me realise that there were philosophical and cultural limitations that prevented me from having a more direct relationship with my creative side. To overcome this, it naturally followed that dedicating my full attention to my work satiated my aspiration. Islam and nature are my sources of inspiration. The countless ways to include calligraphy in a drawing genuinely astound me. I've had the good fortune to visit numerous locations and marvel at amazing mosques and natural wonders all over the world.
