The Japanese art I grew up with continues to influence my work—in this case the smudge like eyebrows of a Noh mask. Always the ladders! I’m fond of them for their looks and because they allow one to defy gravity and move vertically through space. I view language as a ladder that allows movement between cultures and emotional states. A piece's title is integral; it usually comes to me at the same time as the composition and I think about what it means as the piece is forming. Working on this painting, I realized I’ve viewed forgiveness as a form of weakness or resignation when in fact it can be a form of ferocious clarity and acceptance. The sheen of the blue velvet applied to the ribbon contrasts with the watercolor. The thick handmade paper from India is able to handle repeated layers of heavy pigment which results in intense color of the background.

France
Terrell Lozada (b. 1962) is an American painter and sculptor living in Paris. She uses imagery and language to create works that explore the metaphysics of gender and power in contemporary society. Her work represents an internal, emotional world through objects subjected to unreliable or suspended gravity. Her aesthetic fulcrum is the late 18th century, particularly as it relates to French architecture. She works in a wide variety of media including watercolor, oil on panel, cast bronze, etchings and carved wood. She is currently exploring tin-glazed terracotta (faïence stannifère) to combine color and form.
