"The Burden of Our Names", 2015 - acrylic on canvas, 16 x 20 inches (40 x 50 cm). The child seems calm and unharmed, yet he is voiceless and alone, standing outside the home, excluded from the room we barely glimpse through the window behind him. What is the narrative, the story that he cannot tell? Although the colors and brushwork of this painting suggest Impressionism, the subtle distortions of perspective and viewpoint owe more to the traditions of Expressionism of artists such as Max Beckmann and Edvard Munch, while the psychological tone is that of Balthus or Kirchner. The child's figure is pushed almost out of the frame, yet he remains the focus of the overall image, his pale, monochromatic skin and clothing presenting a strong contrast to the warm, Mediterranean colors of the wall and shrubbery, while the blue-gray of his trousers and the touches of gray in his jacket echo the shadowy interior space the window only partly reveals. This picture was painted on triple-primed cotton duck using top-quality Golden acrylics, and the final image was sealed with a light application of UV-resistant acrylic polymer varnish. The painting is ready to hang; signed and dated both on the front and the back, and the title also appears on the back.
