The USS Iowa was the lead ship of the last battleship class to be built. She served in WWII, Korea and was reactivated in the 1980's before being decommissioned and mothballed for the last time in 1990. She was sent to the Reserve Fleet in Suisun Bay (near San Francisco) where she sat for almost 10 years. While the rest of her sisters, Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Missouri were all turned into museums, Iowa sat rusting in the bay until she was finally acquired by the Pacific Battleship Center in Los Angeles. On May 26, 2012 she was towed from Suisun Bay to begin her journey to L.A. This work depicts this momentous occasion. The painting is loosely inspired by Turner's "The Fighting Temeraire." Whereas Turner was depicting the end of the age of sail, I am depicting the end of the age of Battleships. This painting is framed and ready to hang.

United States
Most of my artwork revolves around military and particularly naval subjects. This is mainly owed to my experiences during twelve years in the U.S. Navy, ten of that at sea. I enjoy painting historical subjects as well as from my own personal experiences at sea. I also enjoy portraiture and depicting people. My biggest influences are marine artists of the Dutch Renaissance, such as Van de Velde, and Romantic Period artists such as Turner.
