I had a large garden once in North Carolina, almost a half acre. To get to it from the house, you would have to walk down the drive around two bends on a sandy one-way lane and then you would kind of come up on a hill. It was on a 200-acre farm that our neighbor was kind enough to let us have a patch. There was a small creek beside it and and old man-made bridge out of railroad ties. Anyway, one spring we decided to burn the garden off for good measure. Well, we picked the wrong day. The wind picked up and away she went. I sent my daughter to the neighbor's to call the fire department and to get some shovels so we could beat it back from crossing the creek. By the time the firetruck got there, it had jumped the creek and was half way up a large pine tree. Well, as you know, it was in the South and in the country, so nothing is ever rushed. The fireman got out of the truck (it was an old firetruck) and just stood there. "I can't cross that bridge" he said. "You'll just have to manage it some other way." This painting is minimal in quantity of paint used and is painted on un-primed, raw canvas. It has horizontal lines running throughout it which corresponds with a signature style of mine. It is large and presently unstretched and ships in a tube. It has a striking quality because of the contrast of the orange and black. It reminds of a fire at night. If you look closely, there appears to be an abstract figure (very small) of a person walking in the background.

I was born in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1962 as Patty Jo Beaton which is how I sign my works. Throughout my life, I have lived in several places within the United States including Colorado, Arizona, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Florida and Missouri - but for for over ten years I've lived in Canada. Along the way, I enjoyed experiencing the different cultures and ways of life - southern hospitality, the diversity of City life in Chicago, and being "out west." My first experience with painting was painting my family's old farmhouse with my Father. Later in life, I would take finished works over to him so he could view them. We would discuss the painting and suggestions he had. As far as work, I was a house painter for several years. I worked on historical houses, residential homes and even a couple of churches. All the work was done by hand. I had one very good brush which I was expected to keep clean and use every day. I would paint from 8 to 5 like a regular work day. As far as developing my artistic style, (as you can see from my full catalogue of works) I use many abstract styles. I can't always duplicate certain aspects or stylistic elements. My work is more determined by what comes my way - what I feel and what I'm receiving. It is how I communicate. I've come to realize that some of my works are about things I'm not comfortable doing or wish I could do more easily - like having a party or going out on the town. It is kind of funny that's how I experience those things. Many of my works are also about nature. If you have been to a pristine, natural area you know the feeling I'm trying to capture. Her work has been featured in several exhibits, and her paintings are included in private collections in Malta, Canada, Great Britain, France, United States, China, Germany and Switzerland.
