About The Artwork

The ECCA “Tea Factory” curatorial project “Mausoleum Renaissance” was exhibited in the “Ya Gretera” Gallery in Kiev, Ukraine, in September 2012. A highlight of the exhibition was the art piece “Training and Warning Signs / Caution Accident!”, which was based on the 1960-1970s painting on canvas bottom layer. This 1960-1970s painting was a post-war socialist realism copy painting that was produced at the Odessa Branch of the Artists' Union of the USSR Art Fund Combine. The “neo-classicist” and “primitivist” retrostyle art pieces of the 1960s and 1970s have been reinvented and changed by the young artists of ECCA “Tea Factory”. Artists do not necessarily seek to satirize the Socialist era in their work, but more likely strive to explore how ideas were replaced and to analyze what happened historically during this time. The accepted definition of the “correct style” for Socialist Realism at the time was quite restrictive, and did not leave much room for the acknowledgment of other art-historical models. This dogma was especially harsh during the early post-war years, which is referred to as the “Zdanov era”. This is evidenced in the work of Susan Reid in her essay, titled “The ‘Art Memory’: Retrospectivism in Soviet Painting of the Brezhnev Era”, which was published in the book Art of the Soviets, 1917-1992. Her essay delves deeply into the notion of retrospectivism in Soviet painting during the Brezhnev era, and shows how the norms of the era limited the scope of artistic expression. This serves as a reminder of the rigid rules imposed by Socialist Realism, and how they affected both the artwork and the artists themselves.
