About The Artwork

African jacanas (Actophilornis africanus), from sub-Saharan Africa (as indicated by the name, of course). Jacanas are also known as lily-trotters, with their very long toes adapted for walking on floating vegetation. As with many of my paintings, there is probably some influence of Gauguin and Diebenkorn in there, in the colors and the shapes and the marks. Alkyd oils on canvas, with acrylic underpainting and additional use of graphite pencil and marker pen. Canvas edges white. Signed and dated bottom right (though I took the photo before signing). [Alkyd oils are closely similar to traditional oils in working properties and end appearance; but they dry more quickly, which suits my approach... most pigments are dry-to-touch within 24 hours.] Size 50 x 50 cm (19.7 x 19.7 inches), edge depth 1.8 cm (0.7 inches). The painting has a complex history. I sold it to a local collector; meanwhile, another buyer desperately wanted it, so I painted a Version 2 for her. But then the first buyer asked to return it, in exchange for a different painting. That's why it was listed as "Sold" but is now "For Sale" again!

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My art imagines what birds might say if they could speak our language. They would fear and hate us, surely: we are fast destroying their planet. They would tell us to stop before it's too late. But perhaps they'd frame that with love. I think they would frame it with love. Website: https://www.raphus.co.uk/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/raphus.artist/ Contact: raphus.art@gmail.com
