About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by the personality of a very close friend. It is a kind of portrait. The painting describes the brilliance of the prime of life which is ineluctably drawn back into the underworld where it waits in a kind of secret glory to be fulfilled again next summer and the next and the next I choose charcoal as my main medium because it is so immediate and responds like velvet to the touch. I use colour because it makes a drawing sing. I crush the paper that I draw on because it gives the ground a kind of life of its own which makes a dialogue between the materials

I am a fine artist, originally trained in South Africa, but working in London and Paris. I have continually renewed my work, which has always remained rooted in traditional practices such as painting, drawing and graphic work. My work is always figurative and often combines all three practices with the use of threads of red, to interweave the different elements as a means of embedding the threads into my drawings and painting. For a long time I painted only Amaryllis Lilies but more recently I have begun to make one-off artists books. Though my subjects might change, my obsession has always lain in telling a story without words that depends on observed reality and its relationship to the imagination.
