Butterfly Lyrics - Limited Edition of 10 Print

I wanted to present the lyrics to the song in such a way as to convey something of the nature of the subject matter. I wrote this song (originally) about "coming of age" -but the song has (for me at least) come to take on a deeper meaning -of which I wasn't conscious at the time. I think of it now as a paean to Christ's triumph over death in the crucifixion. The idea is that through his transfiguration he became immortal. His death was his rebirth into eternal life -and that is the path that "believers" take -through temporal pain to eternal freedom. In fact, that is the only path to life eternal. I hasten to add that I am not religious (nor have I been for many years -that is another story), but I do believe that we are all spiritual -and that we all go to heaven, whether we are religious or not. That's not simply my "feeling" or hope anymore as it's borne out by the work of Dr. Peter Fenwick (which I highly recommend). So (for me) the song has come to take on the deepest meaning and is, therefore, more profound than when I wrote it -and worth preserving pictorially. I could easily have used typeset lyrics -but I think that would have squeezed the personality out of the work. I've always strived to create lyrics that are poetic, and I think that a poem should have at least three meanings or be open to at least three different interpretations. For my "Butterfly" was important because it was my first solo composition which "emerged completely" -and I guess it is my "signature tune" in a sense -for that reason. I hope that it finds its way into other people's hearts too. We tend to see death as a "tragic end" but I believe that it is a door, nothing less, and nothing more.
