I had been looking for a Cardoon to photograph for a while as they had been in season but I hadn't had any luck. Then I found this specimen on a broken stem with two flower heads that had been blown over during high winds, a bit of a gift of Nature which was dangling over the footpath. No trespassing or sharp implements were involved in harvesting this flower, honest. Olympus Cameras sent me a camera and some lenses to try out and I had this Cardoon drying in the studio. After working out which button did what on the new camera, I photographed this specimen and was thoroughly delighted with the result. The image is from a series of flower portraits called Plantae Secreto, that I've made of dead and decaying flowers. I've used a type of light called a Beauty Box that is normally reserved for Glamour/Portraiture work because of the soft nature of it's luminescence. The Image size is 79cm x 52.6 printed on Innova 315gsm Smooth Cotton High White Matte paper using Epson Ultrachrome HDR inks. Paper is A1 size - 84.1cm x 59.4. Signature, Date, Title and Edition Number on Verso. Sent with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Born in 1955 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and could not wait to get away. Spent time after finishing an ignominious school career in Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan Pakistan, India and Nepal. Then studied Photography at Sheffield Poly, starting in 1979. Did Teacher Training and taught for 1 year at a school in North London which was more than enough. Subsequently worked for Warner Brothers in a non photographic capacity and the BBC both Teaching and Photographing. I have recently returned to working with traditional, wet processes alongside digital. The images in my portfolio start in the 70's and go through to the present day. www.ianhoskin.co.uk
