About The Artwork

On a very quiet calm day by the edge of Loch Eck in the Scottish Highlands, the soft dawn mist envelopes and softens mountains and trees. This small tree sits in the loch not far from the edge. It grows on top of a submerged crannog, an ancient dwelling built thousands of years ago to protect people in troubled times from animals or raiders. The little tree, the only visible sign marking the location seems to signify strength, tenacity and peace. This is a single image made in the camera using subtle movements as I take the picture. As I make these abstract landscapes I have an idea of how the image should look but each time the results are exciting and new. I am drawn to the fabulous aqua colour of the water around the Isle of Harris and I love to bring out this fresh, calming atmosphere in my picture. Printed at 44 x 44 inches including a 2 inches white border with the signature, edition number and title under the image. Available in other sizes and on paper. Printed on Canson Arches Aquarelle, one of the most beautiful papers I have ever worked with! Canson Arches Aquarelle has history of this paper goes back centuries. It has a soft structure like a watercolour paper that enhances the image creating a softness and warmth like a watercolour painting. Arches-Canson are one of the oldest paper manufacturers in the world, they have been making paper for over 450 years in France. Founded in 1557 and printers to Louis XVI, their paper was used by Voltaire and Napoleon and the Montgolfier brothers used Canson paper to make the first hot air balloon. Arches paper was used by Picasso, Ingres, Chagal, Miro and many other artists. They have been making paper and canvas for photography since this art began over 150 years ago. Canson are Eco Friendly - they purchase paper pulp for their materials only from forests managed in a sustainable way which also makes them pretty special.

As a professional photographer I travel often to the islands of northern Scotland to make my images in places that provoke a profound emotional reaction. The colours, the textures, the wildness of the places and the history are all intertwined in a fascinating, and often bewildering melting pot of sensation that forces me to make art. After moving many times to get to where I should be, I now live on top of a cliff at the northern end of the Isle of Skye. Skye is a large and very beautiful island in the far north of Scotland; a place of inspiration, myth and legend. The beauty of the landscape draws artists and walkers, photographers and lovers of Nature like a magnet, and I am likewise smitten. Skye has a ruggedness and intense green hills that would make anyone pick up a camera or a paintbrush. My work has moved through variations on a theme of movement and colour. Whether the camera moves or I move or the landscape moves it is all the same. Colours, moving blending and soaking into one another create a sense of playfulness, the feeling you get when the wind is in your hair on a bright sunny day. More and more I wonder if there is any end to how one can capture the colours, the lines and the essence of a place. In my studio today, the bright green Hill of the Red Fox is shrouded in a light mist, the wind is howling and the clouds are moving quickly across the hills. It is a scene that makes my heart sing. I hope my work conveys some of the joy I feel when I see these colours, the harmony and the wind singing through it all. It is at least a quest that, hopefully, will last a lifetime.
