Photography: recycled glass artwork, performance, digital manipulation. This picture is the portrait of a community of artists living in Eagle’s Nest, a beautiful space for arts, yoga and other activities promoting well-being, based in San Marcos La Laguna, one of the small villages along the banks of the Atitlán lake. It is a playful and surrealistic image of what all artists are searching for, on behalf of every human being: freedom, sense of community and belonging, exploration of the limits of humankind through diving into the void. The mask all the artists are wearing represents an Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus), one of the most representative birds of prey of Guatemala. Being in a country without a proper waste management system, where most wastes are burnt or thrown to the ground or the water, the artist decided to use only recycled paper and glasses for the creation of the artwork. Born in Naples (Italy) in 1983, Marco Tavolaro is a transmedia artist currently based in Madrid, Spain. His expressive means range from ink pen drawing to engraving, from video to animation, from land art to mapping projection, from music to performance. Starting his career as a contemporary artist in 2010, after graduating in Illustration and Multimedia Animation in the IED of Rome, his first collection of works was The Self-drawing Brain Project: using both hands he would give visual representation to the functionalities of the corresponding cerebral hemispheres. Afterwards he developed performance and land art, discussing topics such as the distortion of perception and the freedom of expression, in the Salzburg International Academy of FA (Austria) and in Medialab Prado (Madrid). In his deepening investigation about what is reality and how it is possible to represent it the most truthful way, he later created The Experimental Cure, etching engraving series realised in Vipassana meditation state, a project winning several awards and exhibited in group shows around the world and in a solo exhibition in Blanca Soto Gallery, Madrid.
