A close up of the dam and the north bank of the river, showing an interesting rock formation. This formation occurred some 300 million years ago when the Northwest margin of Africa collided with North America to form one of the great mountain ranges of earth history. The rocks we see (and a lot of people climb and relax on) are the roots of this ancient mountain range, long since eroded into rolling hills. This park, owned by Mecklenburg County and maintained by the nearby town of South Hill, is such an amazing resource is so many aspects.
