About The Artwork

Olive trees... Almost eternal, sacred creatures. I am living in a country that has many. Not only domestic ones but also the wild olives scattered on the coasts. Many summers of my early life passed on the coasts of the Turkish Northern Aegean, the “Sea with Olives” where my roots are extended. With my cousins, we wandered along the deserted coast between the olive groves and the sea. There are thousands of summer houses and many people during the summer months today on the deserted coasts with the olive groves of my childhood. The number of olive trees is probably greater today but the coastal landscape is altered largely. Olive groves have always been a semi-natural habitat for many species. No one thought to fence their olive trees during my childhood. Today you can see fences here and there in some regions. It is a joy for me to walk in the olive grooves, and seek for the old olive trees. They look like vice old men and women with wrinkled faces and hands. This series of photographs of olive trees connects me to my joyful childhood times by the “Sea with Olives”. These olive trees were photographed in Yenikoy, Foça, Turkey.

Experienced in coastal and marine conservation, protected area management, fisheries, planning-conducting-managing field research, and public awareness activities, project designing and management, the Mediterranean Monk Seal and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica, and photography. Co-founder and researcher in AFAG (Mediterranean Seal Research Group) since 1987. Pioneer member, researcher, and board member in SAD (Underwater Research Society) since 1994. Chairperson of SAD for the 13th term (2020-2022). Awardee in three Henry Ford Nature Conservation Awards together with his colleagues. I graduated from high school in 1983 and then attended ITU Ocean Engineering and METU Geological Engineering departments until 1992. I have been active in the marine and coastal conservation field since 1987 and was appointed as project executant for Turkey’s first seal&sea&coastal conservation project in 1993 by WWF International and the Turkish Ministry for the Environment. Since then I have been active in this field. I have worked a lot with artisanal fishermen as one of the most ignored and vulnerable communities. They have an excellent potential for conservation of the coastal biodiversity. Their life depends on this. In my photography, I mainly focused on daily life and seascapes and landscapes. My three current long-term projects are on the life of artisanal fishers, olive trees, and protected seascapes of Turkey. I have taken photographs since the 1980s. I live in Ankara, Türkiye.
