About The Artwork

In 1922, during Prohibition, activist and former stagecoach driver, Leland Stanford Chumley decided to turn his blacksmith shop on 86 Bedford Street in New York's West Village into a Speakeasy. Over time, the bar and restaurant became renown for its atmosphere and for its regular patrons who included artists and literary greats like John Steinbeck, F Scott Fitzgerald, Willa Cather, Dylan Thomas, Ernest Hemingway and Jack Kerouac. The walls were lined with the book covers of famous literary works and the photos of their authors. On the front of the establishment there was no sign, only the address number. The original intent was to call as little attention to the place as possible for fear of police raids. For those who have worked in the restaurant profession, the number 86 is well known because it is still often employed as a term used to designate the removal of an item from a menu; "86 it." As the story goes, when a raid took was immanent, customers were alerted and directed to use a "secret" back door exit to "remove" themselves from the possibility of arrest. The small peep hole on the front door was used to monitor incoming patrons so the managers would have time to warn the patrons. Eventually, high food costs and other considerations forced Chumley's to close its doors in the early 2000s. There were several attempts at restoring and reopening since then, but unfortunately none succeeded. In 2020 Chumley's was declared "Permanently Closed." My illustration is probably not completely accurate, but based on research, old photos and some second hand testimony, it is close to how the place looked in 1940. Another New York City icon living now only in our hearts and minds.

Born and raised in Connecticut, I was fortunate to be exposed to myriad artistic influences by way of my proximity to Yale University and New York City. Just before my move to Nashville about thirteen years ago I became enamored with Mixed Media. This platform offered endless material sources, tools and subject possibilities. My personal version of the form has been described as "Whimsical and Romantic," "Insightful and Intelligent," "Bold and Rich," and my personal favorite, "Uniquely off Center." Although Contemporary, influences evident in my work include Impressionism, Abstractionism and Pop Art, but generally speaking, I am not fond of labels. I instead choose to repurpose the words of Duke Ellington, "If it sounds good, it's good." As you might expect, I have no use for self appointed Critics poised to hand down declarations defining what is right and what is wrong. There is no right. There is no wrong. There is only what speaks to a viewer and what does not, but neither has any bearing on what I choose to create and how I choose to create it. My overall approach is greatly influenced by my fascination with light and perspective. I draw great satisfaction from challenging and contorting the parameters of both. What that yields is an "organism" that is essentially a reflection of how I perceive reality, my own personal not quite sane world. My ultimate goal is to move hearts and titillate minds. If I can bring a smile to your face or even better, alter in some small way what YOU see as reality, I am blessed. If you like my art and should decide to make a purchase, I would recommend that you not order the smallest size option shown under each thumbnail image. This is not about money, it is simply a question of what you will be able to see in a work. You are certainly free to buy a smaller size print, but there is quite a bit of detail in most of the prints that will not be easily observed in a smaller sized format.
