About The Artwork
Reception No.1 in Yellow Cedar - 2018- is the most recent form in my exploration of freestanding abstract forms. I start with sketches, filling pages in search for the next form to carve. I seek to find forms that possess subtle internal conflicts ultimately finding resolution and harmony in the whole. I brought this sculpture to a fine natural finish by dry polishing up to 400 grit without any wax or oil. The natural surface and lightness in colour was desired. (Wax and oil brings the yellow cedar to a darker yellow) In this specific piece, I can say there are themes of acceptance, deep reception of circumstances, and celebration.

Mike Sasaki was born in Toronto, Canada. He graduated from the Bachelor of Design Honours program at York University / Sheridan College in 2005. He lived in Tokyo, Japan for 5 years where he was immersed in traditional and modern Japanese culture. The martial arts philosophies have played an important role in his artistic development. In his search for a hands on approach he has found sculpting in wood a wonderful solution. He is currently living in Metro Vancouver and focusing on the metamorphic line of abstract wood forms.
