I am reflecting on the overtones of icons that we use every day in apps, web sites, and social media. I worked at Apple when it was a computer company and we moved into something new, a graphic user interface. That required new elements, such as menus, buttons, links, and icons. The icons I am exploring are the ones that actually do something. You click, and something happens. But what Steve Jobs realized was that an icon without some explanation could be confusing. So these days every icon comes with hover text, naming it. I take off from that name, and from its function, to ponder what such an artifact may mean in our culture.

Starting with a Doctorate in Fine Arts from Yale, I worked in conceptual art and concrete poetry, showing in co-op galleries, The Jewish Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York. At Apple, when it was primarily a computer company, I created the style guide used by their technical communication teams; I designed, edited, and wrote content for regular users, and thanks to MacPaint, started taking my artistic practice into the digital realm. I work in multiple applications on a Mac, exploring NASA photographs of the terrain that migrants go through coming to the United States, blended with topographic maps, vector analyses, and color studies. I explore mysterious landscapes, as when the Visitors arrive in Manhattan or New Mexico, strange alien shapes that enter into familiar cities or forests.
