About The Artwork

This drawing is a combination of 36 small drawings. Together they make up the larger artwork that has been divided into 6 frames. I chose this way of working and presenting because it mimics the way a large view is seen (through my eyes anyway). Although as a viewer you have the idea that you are overviewing the whole scene, you are actually focussing on small parts. Working from that starting point I forced myself to focus differently on what I was looking at, and in doing so direct the viewer’s way of looking, enriching it and making it more concentrated. The work is the result of combining several observations over a couple of weeks from the Costa do Castelo in Lisbon, Portugal. Over the initial drawings in ink, made to create a sort of basic rhythm of lines and directions, I worked with pastels to give them their final, more colourful appearance. In one of the photo’s you see it as it was on display, and how it could look on your wall. However, there are more ways of hanging the frames, depending on your preferences (and imagination).

Through my art I share the observations I make of my surroundings, my feelings and my thoughts. Looking at the world as a painter allows me to look with a different and more observant eye. The things I see, observe and feel I translate into realistic images, but they are always more than a mere depiction of reality. They possess a deeper and more personal layer with which I invite the viewer to look closer, to share my view.
