NOT HERE by Roman. Was displayed at the Minehead Regal Theatre in aid of Sparrows Anti Slavery South West Charity. Why 'Not Here'? Various reasons came to mind creating this image. 'Not Here'. An old slavery shackle I used, as slavery is still here but the shackle may not be. The shackle is not here. People are coerced in various ways into slavery, a shackle isn't needed. 'Not Here'. The girl is present but vacant. Eyes have lost their freedom, life, their shine, their sparkle. As she has. 'Not Here'. She’s a missing person. Lost somewhere. Represents the families that hurt and struggle also. 'Not Here'. Literally 'NOT HERE'. With awareness comes freedom. We don't want this here or anywhere. Where's the chain? 'Not Here'. Broken. As all slavery should be. She's free but the shackle remains. Where the charity and compassion comes in. The repair, the hope. The frame is reclaimed and restored. Painted white. Pure once more. The original frame was of gold. Any knocks to the frame will reveal gold. Everyone is precious. The image is strong the subject is uncomfortable, but look closely and there's hope in a dark place. A way out. There's light in the darkness always. Charcoal pencil, Faber-Castill pencil. https://rhws.org.uk/about/

United Kingdom
Born in the Midlands, Black Country, UK. Always loved to draw from an early age. Now a Somerset based artist / photographer with a great passion for layered works in graphite, charcoal, conte crayon & pencil on paper. Portraiture & figurative. Strong, powerful drawings. Love to work in darker tones for dramatic effect, graphite sticks, 2b, 8b & above. After years of working in therapy, I started to draw, create again. Fell in love once more, realising 'this time' my experience of life and emotion heightened my awareness of what I was trying to capture. Portraiture is my passion.
