About The Artwork

In the series "...to avoid evil." I touch upon the fear that every girl has planted deep within her, to a greater or lesser degree; the fear of walking alone (at night). Any girl has experienced this fear, even once in her life, and this fear is not directed at night walks that take place in secluded alleys and infamous areas. This innate fear stems from the potential helplessness a girl feels to defend her body and personal space, in any situation, in any location. Fortunately, in recent years this fear tends to be lifted thanks to some change in the mentality of the contemporaries, but this does not mean its elimination. A group of girls through social networks, decided to show with exemplary videos, how they feel safe walking alone (at night), with their "scary" dogs for company. This resulted in a parade of video evidence accompanied by the hashtag #scarydogprivilege and often accompanied by the phrase “using my scary dog privilege to walk alone at night”, which show the girls themselves walking their "scary" dogs, which are usually from breeds that are either intended for guard dogs, or simply make the passerby think twice before approaching them, such as Doberman, Great Danes, Dogo Argentino, etc. In the same line of thought, the sizes of the works seem to put the viewer inside the event itself; the viewer, looking at the artwork, feels that they are making the video themselves, that they are holding the dog's leash theselves, thus identifying with the situation which where each girl finds herself, she feels her footsteps similar to those of the creature she trusts to guard her when she walks alone. I chose to create this series by simulating the textures of pencil and charcoal in realistic digital form, wanting to connect the digital snapshots I captured from videos trending through social networks with a natural and malleable material such as pencil and charcoal that reflect the reality behind the theme of the project.
