About The Artwork

Series: Pop Art 2021 Size: 16 x 24 inches Digital painting heat infused on gloss white aluminum with UV resistant ink Description: “It’s embarrassing and demoralizing what I’ve been through, and that’s the main reason I didn’t say it openly. And mainly, I didn't want to say it openly 'cause I honestly don't think anyone would believe me. I just want my life back.” Britney Spears, June 2021, during her testimony to regain control over her own life and be freed from the conservatorship by her father who controlled her body and her money. What do you see when you look at Britney Spears? In this piece, I wanted to highlight the way that Britney Spears was highly sexualized from a very young age, and the way that she was molded to exist for our sexual pleasure and entertainment. The pose with her tilting her head back, arms wide open, thrusting her naked breasts represents submission, vulnerability, and availability. She’s almost completely naked and open; she is inviting you. She is yours for the taking. However, if you look at her hand, what do you see? Is it a nail or a key? Is she in control of her life with the key to her own power, or has she been nailed to a wall, controlled by others and completely powerless & helpless? Prior to her testimony, the public believed that being a successful singer and performer, a rich celebrity, that obviously she was empowered to do what she wants. Now we know the truth – that she was a prisoner and a slave to those around her who were happy to use her to profit off her. It was again another story of men controlling women and their bodies & mind. She was labeled as mentally ill – hysterical and forbidden from making her own decisions about having a child or how to spend the money she made or choose the color of her kitchen cabinets. From where do you think the words hysteria and hysterical come? Female Hysteria was a common medical diagnosis widely discussed in the medical literature of the 19th century: a catchall diagnosis for women who were suffering from faintness, nervousness, insomnia, bloating, fluid retention, heaviness in abdomen, muscle spasm, shortness of breath, irritability, loss of appetite for food or sex, and “a tendency to cause trouble.” In 1859, one doctor cataloged 75 pages of possible symptoms of female hysteria. The word hysteria has its origins in “Hustera”, the Greek word for the uterus, and “ia”, a medical suffix for a diseased condition. Simply put, doctors and psychologists believed that women were victims of these physical, mental and emotional symptoms & disorders because there was something wrong with their uterus and organs. How did doctors treat women suffering from Hysteria? Pelvic massage. The doctor would manually stimulate the genitals until the female patient experienced “hysterical paroxysm” – orgasm. So again, what do you see when you look at my piece, “Britney – I Want My Life Back”? From a distance her face exudes joy, excitement and a yearning to submit to you, the viewer, her consumer. However, as you get closer you realize that she's been stripped of all joy; she is empty of life. She is like a plastic doll beautifully coated and glazed with a lacquer – again existing for our pleasure – adorned like a toy with pearls. What has happened to her soul? Her eyes cannot hide the pain and emptiness inside, but we don’t notice that because we don’t care. We are too focused on the glitz and the sexual enticement. Just like Marilyn and many other women before her, Britney has been created by men for the pleasure and satisfaction of men. The flowers that surround her represent the cycle of life, from a seed to blossom and death. Here, Britney is in her blossoming years – her teen years. Does she still have time left to rebirth? The monarch butterfly represents rebirth and transformation, expressing hope that there is a new life and new hope for Britney Spears to become autonomous – to get her life back! The archival print surface material of my fine art prints (Chromaluxe aluminum panels) has been carefully selected to compliment the style of imagery and to bring out the strong textures, deep color tones and high contrast. The work is produced using a technology called sublimation. Sublimation is where inks are infused directly into the specially coated metal sheets. The result of this specialized process are printed images with stunning color tones, vibrancy and resolution while also having a longevity of several lifetimes.

"Ever since I began painting as a teenager, I have believed that art is defined by its ability to provoke a response – to provoke thought and emotions, and to appeal to the senses and imagination. That is the aim of my work." Australian Patrick Wanis has been creating a body of work for the past ten years that provokes conversation and stimulates the senses by exploring and challenging the connection between our emotions, biases, and deep desires for escape and beauty. Beginning as a teenager painting with oils and inspired by the surrealists and impressionists, Wanis now paints digitally, and with a camera. He creates colorful worlds that transport you into an experience where you interpret what you see, and where he often directly challenges your own beliefs and perspectives. “I have lived by the ocean in 5 countries over the past 20 years, and thus my obsession with water reveals itself in the power of light, shadows and reflections. “My work reflects the intersection of technology, social media and the ‘cultural evolution and regression.’ My passion and experience in human behavior draws me to expose the intense emotions and biases of our world. I want to incite a response from the viewer and simultaneously expose and satirize the conflict of the absurdity and surrealism of our own lives. What is real, what is truth, what matters, what is right or wrong? Are you sure you and your ideas and beliefs are superior? “I use words, images, and color to communicate ideas and emotions (humor, laughter, anger, fear, loathing, validation, et al), challenging the viewer to look down or across from a different perspective. “My digital painting series “Famous Tweets In History” explores and highlights the timelessness of meaningful and controversial words by the famous and infamous, revealing something about them or us, and challenging or confronting our beliefs. Some of those words are real tweets, others are quotes or popular quotes from movies. By painting the Followers as people from all eras, I reveal the significance and/or timelessness of the message and communication. Thus, for me, I care about ideas, emotions, biases, and values. I want everyone to question what they believe. I care about the thoughts and the feelings that those words and ideas trigger in us.
