About The Artwork

The work is inspired by a model/sitter named Anais. She took a pose that was both delicate and impact-full. It struck the artist with an image he had seen in a movie, where the lead actress plays a heart broken woman in a tale of love not to be. While gently caressing the back of her head she ponders her relationship state. The title is inspired by a lyric from a song entitled "Black" by the Alt-Rock group Pearl Jam.This piece also won an award for the Artist to be published in Artist Portfolio 10 Competition. Pearl Jam's song "Black" is laced with visual imagery and painting metaphors as well describing a person crumbling and heartbroken as love is not meant to be. Referenced here is the lyric that struck the artist- I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why Why, why can't it be, oh can't it be mine? Ooh, ah yeah, ah ooh

Thomas Legaspi is a New York City based artist working within the context of contemporary realism. He has exhibited in national and international exhibitions while accumulating awards and merits of distinction. His work centers on the narrative potential of figurative art by exploring the emotive introspective states of fragility, dualism, conflict, identity and irony. He pursues images of resolve, and surrender in order to attain personal peace. He is motivated by many vehicles of inspiration including genre paintings, abstract expressionism, and the modern cinematic media. While many of his works are grounded in realism, he often explores modern aesthetic sensibilities of contemporary paint application techniques, mixed media and expressionistic experimentation. The artist strives to create work that has an undercurrent of a positive resolution amidst a measure of strife and difficulty.
