This portrait is my response to the Syrian refugee crisis and the suffering, danger and displacement experienced by so many millions, along with the many millions who are working, volunteering and donating to help them. But it is also a portrait of human pain, which is --unfortunately--felt by all of us, since we are all--to different degrees--broken. This portrait began on paper, mounted on a birch panel, then painted in oil and cold wax, with marker and pastel, as an expressionist, modern portrait. The reverse side of the wood panel has been routed with a "keyhole" so no hanging hardware is required.

I'm interested in the language of abstraction, and I often use collage or multiple layers of paint to express multiple layers of experience. I work in oils, cold wax, watercolor, and sometimes alcohol inks, allowing the strengths of each medium to contribute to the overall expression of the piece. My work appears in private collections throughout the country.
