Choctaw Bill is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs. This painting depicts a Choctaw tribe of men women and children, wrapped in blankets, walking through snow and cold. The Choctaws, known in their language as the River People, were the first Native American tribe forced to relocate under the Indian Removal Act signed by President Andrew Jackson in 1830. They were exiled from their lands in the Southeast and forced to resettle in the Oklahoma Territory. Most of the Choctaws made the journey on foot with many perishing along the way. As such, they were the first tribe to embark on what became known as the “Trail of Tears.”
