About The Artwork

INSPIRATION: While self-isolating, I discovered that my balcony overlooking the Atlantic Ocean doubles as a dance floor. So I put on a pretty dress and go out and dance. Shadows from the railing, choreographed by the rising and setting of the sun, put on a beguiling performance as they wax and wane. Perhaps they are trying to out do the moon. This inexorable, glorious movement of the shadows strikes me as a dance as well.I decided to paint my balcony because it is is not only a dance floor but also a dancing floor. I hope VIEWERS WILL FEEL the romance of the undulating patterns created by shadows, sense the wind in their hair off the ocean and almost be able to smell and taste the sweet scent of the flowers, fruit and rose wine while being serenaded by birdsong. Perhaps they will fall in love with nature, become more imaginative and want to dance too! SHOP TALK: I chose fine grain stretched linen because it is conducive to the meandering swirls of paint I had to apply to depict the multiple curved dancing shadows cast from the ornate wrought iron railing as well as the railing itself. I used acrylic paint because of its versatility. I worked wet on wet by applying retarder to the paint when I was designing and drawing the painting and in later stages, built up layers quickly taking advantage of the medium's slow drying time. Although my paintings are fanciful, I choose to create them in a realistic style. Each rendered item is a fanciful shape in itself!

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
