This work has a very abstract meaning behind it. It's like the previous painting that represents the scene where "... when Dante and Virgil are denied access to the city of hell, God sends a messenger to help the poet continue his voyage and forces the devils minions the open the gates of the city. The painting has a strong Christ symbology in itself..." but as seen through the eyes of the devils minions. In a certain sense the two paintings could be classified as related, given also the fact that they were created simultaneously.
