In the current historical moment, under the aegis of capital, the logic of the market prevails and society is ruled by the exploitation of man. The making of the social being human is intimately related to the need for survival. Considering the gravity of the social problems experienced by humanity as a whole, the current historical moment is terribly barbaric. In this sense, it is important to contextualize the discussion in light of the structural crisis of capital. The fight for this capital leads some people to despair, and others to cruelty. In this painting I have tried to explore the themes of consumption and the migratory crisis - both products of the capitalist world. The need for consumption and to fulfill one's narcissism leads one to develop an almost intimate relationship with the shopping cart, like a lifeboat.

Vera Fonseka is an artist based in Portugal whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally. Fonseka's artistic process is marked by her use of mixed techniques with adhesives, fabrics, acrylics, and oils on canvas. She was born in 1982 in Tallinn (ex URSS, actually Estonia) in an actors-family. In 2003 Vera moved to Portugal where she's been living since then.
