Flight IC 408 Painting

This painting started as a drawing made on board a flight to Tasmania in 2018. It was inspired by the boredom that overtakes passengers on long Airplane rides. I am always drawing figures and especially faces in public if the opportunity arises. The plane is a perfect place in many respects because people are in their own worlds watching films or playing games or reading. I hope viewers will identify with the subjects lost in their headphones with their minds elsewhere than the cramped quarters of their tiny seats. I chose the medium of Oil on Linen because I wanted to change the scale and content of the drawings from something intimate to a more expansive canvas. The challenge of painting large is a different one to drawing in an airplane . I enjoy the outlines of the original drawings and taking them into a larger scale appealed to me.
