The more the painting unfolded, the more conceptual it became. Random shapes took form and the form took meaning. Based on what my thoughts were while painting this, I realized what I had communicated symbolically by the time it was finished. A man with dark skin traces a tree stump that is in the midst of a healing process. . The tree stump is a dead shell of what was once alive. The ghostly stump harbors new life. Moss is growing over it and turkey tail mushrooms have colonized the remains. The tree has presumably been exterminated by humans, as so many trees are. Perhaps it was in a sea of grown over stumps once killed by a corporation. In my mind the tree is a metaphor comparing the tree's life to communities of color that have been targeted by corporations in their chosen locations for toxic waste disposal or mining of the environment. Environmental racism is corporate-political affairs that corner communities of color systematically and harm their living space while also silencing them and giving them no legal or financial support. The man shares space with this tree and observes its healing process. The white cock flies away.
