About The Artwork
‘Having a word’ describes our awkward relationship with nature, and reflects on the often undervalued emotional intelligence of animals. The painting incorporates a heavy dose of anthropomorphism: the act of merging human characteristics with an animal or object. This method, found commonly in children’s literature, is a powerful way in which to garner empathy with an animal. It is this empathy, and the extent to which we act on it, that will determine the planet's future.
