Hexagrams are a balance between order and chaos. There is an element of chance with the I-ching, which has 64 hexagrams as in this series of paintings. There is also order as in chess. The painting was made on multiple pieces of paper, cut up, then arranged with an element of randomness, then controlled by a certain amount of choice. Papers are applied to the panel with acrylic mediums, then paint layers, then final satin varnish, so the painting has a luminous quality, while not shiny. Edges of birch panel are clear coated with layers of sealer.

Word forms as image are the primary focus of my art. I use words as marks and symbols, making layers to form history and depth of imagery. The words I use are often totally illegible, and rely on our intuitive connection with symbols. My influences include medieval illuminated manuscripts, Asian writing and modern graffiti. I like to garden and cook.
