Close up of Illusion by SundayL
This piece started out very differently. The 'pasting' was that of a tight rose, just the inference of the petals, and in rich tones of orange and russet with highlights of gold. And so it was for quite a few months. But there was something about it that wasn't right - it resembled a tunnel of light, but it just wasn't right. I brought it back into my studio and was inspired to place the seemingly random brush strokes over the work. It came alive instantly. I like the' jarriness' of the 'floating' blocks which look like they are in front of the vortex beyond.

There is tactile texture to the underlying vortex on this painting, created with marble dust paste and a number of layers of acrylic paint.

I create art to give pleasure, to myself whilst creating it and to others to uplift, fascinate and resonate with each person. I love texture and I am fascinated by colour and light. I enjoy using texture mediums to create interesting surfaces which I then colour. Many of my paintings have textured contours which cast shadows that change as the light changes and give a different life to each piece throughout a day. I’m captivated by the different ways paint behaves depending on how it’s used, the way the strokes of a brush or palette knife leave their mark, the way the paint mixes and changes with every pass. I love to watch my paintings unfold before me, as although I may start with an idea, I let the paint itself dictate how the piece evolves. Abstractionism is perfect for allowing the colour and form of my work to express the nuances of the paint and mediums themselves, unconstrained by realistic form.
