About The Artwork

My INSPIRATION came from cultivating my colorful flower garden in the fine company of it's beautiful resident wild life. I hope VIEWERS can feel themselves subsumed in the lush, fully grown, rambling, tangled, sky-high fall garden in the good company of some of its resident critters.I hope that they will be as content viewing the painting and feel the peace nature affords that I feel when I am working in the garden. Conceptually, the over-grown garden is a stand in for my image-laden artist's mind. I hope viewers delight in the garden path which leads them "outside-in" to another land - the land of images. This path facilitates the flow of images from my garden into my image-laden artist's mind. An exerpt from my poem: Image-laden Mind ...voraciously I suck in shapes and colors all day long and stuff myself with starry shapes from the night hoarding them to burst forth like buds in the garden when creativity beckons… TECHNICAL MATTERS: I always work on a fine textured stretched linen because it is the bes surface upon which to apply paint. I use acrylic paint because of its versatility. It dries quickly when layering and I can also use it with a retarder when I want to work wet on wet. The colors are brilliant and great for the primary colors I used in this painting. I rendered the images realistically abstraction or impressionism can improve on nature..

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
