About The Artwork

This common bird evokes the spirit of the natural world, even with its diminutive size it can survive harsh winters. This bird lives in town, country and coastal sites, the wren is adept at adapting to the environment. Jaunty Little Wren depicts a Wren (Troglodytidae) in motion, stationary and at the beginning of life. This feathered creature is loud and intense, but it is just a pocket size wren bobbing in and out, more like a mouse than a bird. I hope to show these characterisitics in Jaunty Little Wren. The top two birds are in flight, hopefully you can hear the distinctive whirring sound as it whizzes across the page. All you can see is the chestnut and ochre plumage as the wren's wings flap fast and direct. On the left at the bottom there is an adult wren, perched on an outcrop of rocks perusing the garden. The bobbed, cocked tail reflects the birds' jaunty attitude. This wren is self-confident and cheerful, you can see it in his eyes. Finally, on the bottom right we have the beginning of life, the egg. The egg is an ash cream and speckled with burnished copper spots.

I studied English Literature BA (Hons) at university and I went on to do a Creative Writing course with the Open University. This led me to becoming a writer of children’s books, in particular I enjoy creating picture books. Gradually the picture became my focus and I started to create an Illustrator’s portfolio. The subject matter I work with varies from representing shape and form to intricate details. I am fascinated with nature and its’ various forms, whether it be wild animals, the wilderness, the weather or our pets. These themes compel me to create art. I have a love and deep respect for nature in all its forms, I hope these feelings permeate into the drawings via my brush or pencil. Illustrators such as Axel Scheffler, Alexis Deacon and writers such as Thoreau, Wordsworth, William Blake and George MacDonald inspire my artwork.
