In my practice I free associate images and cut-up text to evoke haiku and the allusions that help us view everyday life with fresh eyes. I draw on the philosophical idea of ‘the Absurd’; the conflict between the human tendency to seek inherent meaning in life and the inability to find any. My works often follow a path of taking the wonder of small things and subverting them into something manic and fierce or poetic and evocative. The characters within the scenarios I create are challenged with weird and impossible predicaments, and the viewer is asked to join them in confronting the strangeness. Generally I let the larger works develop by gradually combining disparate images until a narrative develops in my head. With ‘Klaatu’ I drew on themes I had worked with previously in ‘Replay’: Trump, Brexit and the rise of Populism. ‘Klaatu’ is the name of the alien who visits Earth in ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still’(1951) to warn of the dangers of our "unreasoning suspicions and attitudes". In my analogous piece ‘Klaatu’ the visitor stands central in the work questioning, while the images of missiles, skulls, displaced families and abandoned teddy bears circle him. Why, when we express our altruistic nature in so many ways, is there so much uncertainty and conflict in the global community?

Since beginning his career in 2007, works by Simon Kirk have proved a great investment and are increasingly sought after by art collectors, notably in America, Dubai and Continental Europe. He exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2010, 2013 and 2015. He is a resident artist with the Turner | Barnes | Gallery and his work is regularly exhibited as part of their collections for the Hong Kong, Singapore and London Affordable Art Fairs. He has had solo exhibitions in France, Denmark and the USA. In the main body of his practice he free associates images and cut-up text to evoke haiku and the allusions that help us view everyday life with fresh eyes. The work is primarily layers of painting combined with collaged elements. However, he also uses the decollage technique - cutting, tearing or sanding away parts of the built up surface image to reveal layers below.
