About The Artwork

“Long Mountain” in Washi From my very popular “Mountains in Washi” series. A warm welcoming glow emanates from my latest in this series. How can such a demur sized painting give such a feeling of “all outdoors”? I’m not sure but, I give the credit to the always ready to impress Japanese handmade Washi paper. Hundreds of different styles of Washi are created and so much fun to get to know on an Artistic basis. Textures and embedded materials are completely unique and part and parcel to the depth of refinement and sophistication of the amazing medium I have the pleasure to work with. Strong yet soft colors are mixed using color mixing techniques developed centuries ago by Japanese Monks to portray the “blush” of their venerated Cherry Blossoms. The entire canvas is coated with clear acrylics to protect from harmful UVs. All of my artwork is available in heirloom quality handmade rugs. Contact me for more info.

Jan Sullivan Fowler is a contemporary Artist working in Japanese handmade Washi paper and acrylics to create paintings with a unique flowing form. JSF Studios exemplifies "Life as Art". The Village of Elm Grove, Wisconsin was the perfect place for me to grow up doing art with my Mom(Kay Sullivan). I had received my degree in Fine Art from Milwaukee School of Art in the 70's, when Mom discovered this new mode of expression, Japanese handmade "Washi paper" and acrylics. My style has been referred to as "a new genre of Abstract/Modern", combining the clear ethereal with the contemplative aspects that provide a unifying and calming feeling.(you can see more work at www.JSFStudios.com) The natural fibers of Washi visually float, and add a depth that is unachievable without. I'm featured in Luxe Interiors+Design in the Deign Resource center.
