Ships in a Crate
Caught in a cycle of perpetual birth and death we are constantly facing a challenge of changing ourselves and changing the world around us. We are not powerless, we merely believe we are powerless and most of what energy we possess goes towards reinforcing and then battling that belief. Life begins every day. Death may come every day. The world is a sea in which we choose to either swim or despair. In early stages of embryonic development there is hardly any difference between a fish and a human. The difference between the two is not purely biological. A certain grain of life chooses to become either a fish or a human. From the perspective of life there is no difference between a boy and a salmon. From the perspective of death neither. And from the perspective of a salmon? The only living organism that can wish to become anything or everything else most of the time chooses to be greedy, aggressive, abusive... Humans don't deserve humanity. Maybe the fish are more deserving of it. This piece is a part of a 12-piece series titled "CATCH" - the pieces share the format as well as the main motif of the juxtaposition of the fish world with the human world. Each of the pieces is created in a fish crate collected from a beach on the east coast of Istria, Croatia. Violent north-western winds knock these crates overboard from fishing boats coming in and out of the harbor. Each piece is a tableau of sort representing a stage in the development of human destiny. The wheel in the center of this particular piece comes from a 1960's baby stroller. Life oozes from the center of the wheel taking shape in different forms only one of which is aware of oneself, aware of the world, aware of the wheel.

Croatia
Born in Slavonski Brod (Croatia, 1975.) I live and work in Liznjan (Istria, Croatia) where we, my wife Natalija Grgorinic, our son Ljubomir and I, run ZVONA i NARI, an artist residency and a library. For the past 25 years Natalija and I have been engaged in literary work, publishing novels in both Croatian and English. In a sense, my visual work is continuation of our joint artistic preoccupations, another form of articulating ideas we share. It is also a manifestation of my belief that all art is an endeavor to both transform but also create and expand the world.
