"Migratory", 2015 - acrylic and cut-paper collage on wood, 28 inches tall by 24 inches wide (70 x 60 cm.) Acrylic paint, plaster, and cut paper (newsprint, kraft paper, tissue, maps) are layered and sanded smooth and flat. The small forms suggest wheeling flocks of birds. Passages of blue, gray-blue, and white evoke the open sky, while large brown forms surging through the background express the irresistible underlying call to movement. Although the colors are the soft, natural colors of Impressionist painting, the rhythms and abstract forms are reminiscent of Modernist painters like Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. This picture was executed on 1/4" birch-surfaced plywood, primed with an oyster-white latex enamel over acrylic gesso. The paints used were Golden acrylics; collage elements were coated and mounted with a UV-resistant acrylic medium to prevent fading or discoloration. The entire complete painting was lightly varnished with a UV-resistant acrylic polymer varnish, then framed in a wood “floater” frame, ready to hang; it is signed and dated both front and back, with title on back.

United States
Born in Montgomery, Alabama, and raised in the rural Appalachian foothills of the northeastern part of the state, my childhood was surrounded by the natural world, the rigid social and cultural traditions of the deep South, the distant rumblings of 1960's social changes, and the panoramas of human existence revealed to me through reading, music and art. Most of my adult life has been spent working as a graphic designer in Birmingham, South Florida, and Dallas -- primarily in the television industry -- where I was immersed yet another hybrid universe, a fun-house world of ego, transitory celebrity, and social manipulation. These days I live and work in a cabin on the edge of the Ozark National Forest in northwest Arkansas, decompressing.
