This is two paintings in one. I did the background work some number of months before the foreground work. It's quite emotional, and I got frustrated and rolled the canvas up and put it under my work table. After coming back from an artist residency in Romania, I unrolled the canvas and though, well this isn't so bad after all, and I turned it into a finished painting. The background of this painting is mostly sharpie marker and high flow acrylics applied to a wet canvas, which creates a nice color wash with subtle gradients. It's sort of blurry back there. This is in contrast with the foreground, which is pretty sharp and done mostly in acrylic pouring medium and high flow and fluid acrylics. The blurred background is in contrast with the sharp foreground, creating the illusion of space between. The painting contains its own ecosystem, with a number of forces all balancing each other out. It's a contained chaos; a play with one thousand extras. It's a nice place to put your eyeballs for a while.
