In this original painting, the planet earth is depicted as a stylized labyrinth which is synonymous with David Bennison’s visual language. However, in this composition, it becomes a representation of a printed circuit board.

As we reach into the stars, beyond our moon, the lighthouse becomes a metaphor for an outdated system where it guides us to the stars, steadfast on an isolated rock, a proven old-school but reliable system of navigation: a basic and possibly even obsolete technology, but still perfectly functional, simple and most importantly, trustworthy.

As we are using more and more advanced technology that perhaps we can’t fully control and understand, are we reaching out and beyond the moon to the stars too fast? Off-Grid serves as a warning metaphor for all technology from space travel, computers, phones, clouds, Internet, tracking and integrated systems. It represents the fear of a heavy reliance upon technology and its continuous threat of cyber-attack.

Computer processing speed doubles every 18 months. This is known as Moore’s Law.

Moore's law is the observation that the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit doubles about every two years. Moore's law is an observation and projection of a historical trend. Rather than a law of physics, it is an empirical relationship linked to gains from experience in production.

Society is becoming more afraid of technological issues than they are of dying or of ghosts.

Technology is moving so fast that the layman doesn’t have an awareness of what is going on until they are violated through cyber-crime.

There is an ever-increasing violation of privacy from information gathering, surveillance and
personal information tracking.
Identity theft and financial loss and Social media sickness are prevalent.

Self-driving cars make life or death decisions, drones and Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous AI, workplace automation and robot doctors are imbedding in our society while Smart devices eavesdrop in conversation, collecting data on human habits.

Androids, enhanced immortality and interstellar travel are an inevitable future for us all.

Technological advancement clearly benefits humanity, however, what happens if it all goes terribly wrong?

The lighthouse will shine once again.

About The Artwork

Known as Moore’s Law, computer processing speed doubles every 18 months... Off-Grid is a painting created in response to a technological world that may be advancing too rapidly. Moore's law is the observation that the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit doubles about every two years. Moore's law is an observation and projection of a historical trend. Rather than a law of physics, it is an empirical relationship linked to gains from experience in production. Androids, enhanced immortality and interstellar travel are an inevitable future for us all. Technological advancement benefits humanity, however, what happens if it all goes wrong? The archaic lighthouse represents an outdated navigation system that guides humankind into the galaxy and beyond. Steadfast, dependable and reliable, this basic, near obsolete but functional metaphor remains consistent and trustworthy in a world of new and very sophisticated technology. Graduating from the Cambridge school of Art in Illustration, David Bennison is a full-time British artist living and working in Cambridge, UK. His concepts have remained firmly grounded in the exploration of curvilinear perspective which complements his current work that has its origins in visual dream interpretation. David’s fine art painting explores ethereal and figurative subject matter that is interweaved with multiple viewpoints to produce intangible landscapes that continue a narrative from one canvas to the next. Repeated metaphors suggestive of sexuality, birth and death, seemingly make subtle relationships with confusing, existential pathways of everyday life. Obvious inspirations to David’s work have included the architectural drawings of Piranesi, graphic artist M.C. Escher, Illustrator Paul Hess and local artist and printmaker Glynn Thomas.
