About The Artwork

I started this painting with the query, “Can you hold both at the same time?” Meaning, can you be with the paradoxes that abound within yourself? If we are to hold our paradoxes within the single vessel of the self, we must become divers and go inward and experience the intertwining tensions. The treasure, the “pearl,” is the full circle realization in answering “yes” to the initial question, requiring that you expand yourself in order to hold both—like the layering of nacre on a pearl. The floating collection of shapes feels as if fashioned from pieces of a shipwreck—a large chunk of wood, a wire basket, bits of sheer and striped textiles. The arrangement could be a floating sea creature, the shapes at the bottom gathered into a sort of fishtail. Often elegant and soft in real life, many alluring water beings sport venom or spikes (Can you be a tender human and also accept your anger?). The Pearl Diver, suspended on the light cream background intentionally clear of markings, invites one to view it as a curiosity.

My paintings include hints of two-dimensional icons, stained glass windows, ceremonial objects, carnivalesque paraphernalia, dressmaker pattern pieces, and carefully designed altars. I see the work as functional and as such it may resemble a strange alchemical device, a crude vessel, a protective figure, a fortune teller, a shamanic robe, an asymmetrical mandala…all of which shepherd the process of transformation. I am inspired by the decadence of Art Deco; the hope and efficiency of Mid-Century aesthetics; the joining of texture, light and comfort in interior design; the riotous maximalism in haute couture; the rawness of tribal mark making; and the implied doorway to the unseen in esoteric symbology. All of these influences are cradled in deep investigations into color, particularly its role as a visual phenomenon and catalyst for sparking feeling and narrative. My work is collected worldwide and featured in collections and collaborations in Denver, Seattle, New York City, Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, Nanjing, Dubai, Edinburgh, and Amsterdam among other places.
