I spent one year of lockdown somewhat unexpectedly, over lockdown on the island of Cyprus, in part marooned in part escape. Compared to my native Scotland it was like a desert island oasis. In particular I found the exotic fruit trees hugely inspiring. I would sit and marvel at them in the many walks I took there. Behind the College where I was a resident artist, there was an abandoned olive grove where a pomelo tree grew. I produced a plein air sketch then started on the oil painting. I had an out door easel in a courtyard and eventually worked there much of the year. It could get very hot and after a siesta in a the afternoon I would head to the courtyard to experience the last few hours of the day which had this wonderful saturated light. It made made me think of Van Gogh but it was also a very Middle Eastern light, very much Cyprus.

United Kingdom
Originally born in the Highlands of Scotland, I spent my childhood between there and Perthshire. The influence of the the North West runs particularly strongly in my paintings and also serves as a backdrop for many site specific 3 D work too. Originally my training was in sculpture and I spent the earlier part of my career Working on a commission and Residency Basis In The Public Art Field. Wood was my preferred medium for a number of years, particularly carving on a large scale before I diversified into painting, photography, installation and laterally bronze casting. There is a natural interplay of all these disciplines with each one informing the other. From 1999 to 2016, I worked as a Part - time Tutor at Edinburgh College of Art, leaving that position to concentrate more exclusively on my own free lance pursuits, combined with more extensive travel.
