The Pond Series Monet is the father of all pond painting. A cautionary warning is advisable to the artist who takes it on. However, I walk my dog in a nature conservancy in the Hudson Valley that has a large pond. It is wild, it is native, it is awesome. After years of observing the seasonal and weather changes, I painted the pond. Then I painted it again and again and soon I had a series. This painting, "Pond Passion" is one of a 20-painting series of the pond made over the course of a year. Each painting captures a unique moment or sensation that I feel upon each visit. Often after these walks I can't wait to get back to my studio and paint the experience. I paint with oils on archival paper that I have hand gessoed. Each painting is signed "Ginny Howsam Friedman."

I live and work in Dutchess County/the Hudson Valley/Upstate New York. Here I cannot escape--the landscape. This natural environment has deep connections for me: rivers, ponds, mountains, trails, wetlands, farmland, forests. I look for underlying geometry and order amid nature's chaos. I paint an imagined reality from a perceived experience. With charcoal, graphite and oil sticks while layering oils, I interpret through memory, imagination and atmospheric encounters with nature. Draw/erase. Paint/scrape. A ghost remains. With these traces I move the work toward the bilateral link between what I can see and what I can imagine. I translate both surface and subterranean geography to canvas and paper. The macrocosm and microcosm belong together. This combination casts the familiar in a new light.
