Lacquer (Vietnamese lacquer) is a traditional material of Vietnam. At first, lacquer was applied on handicraft products, and afterwards, it officially became a creative material for artists. There's a saying "paintings catch depending on the faces, ghosts catch depending on humans", because this traditional lacquer can actually burn because it has a lot of acid, so not everyone can do it. Lacquer artists are not many to begin with, and compared to other types of art, lacquer is really hard to practice. Lacquer paintings consist of mainly natural ingredients, with a complicated process and with high prices such as: gold, silver, Vietnamese oil, pearls, eggshell, plastic bottles... The technique depends on each artist, but each technique process is divided in multiple parts, color layers, appliances and timing. Each color layer is a layer of gold or silver, and the procedure to grind out those colors to manifest the form that the artist wish, for requires a lot of skill. If they miss something, the painting might fail. It usually takes the artist 6 months to a year to complete a lacquer painting properly. For that reason, the value of a lacquer painting is not only coming from the artistic value, but also its long-term value: the longer the painting dates, the more beautiful the lacquer is, the deeper the color, therefore, no other material can compare. Here, we're presenting to you lacquer paintings of artist Nguyen Thi Hoa. From all the rare lacquer artists, Nguyen Thi Hoa has achieved multiple criteria such as: the right technique combined with beautiful and delicate forms and colors. Her paintings are dreamy and mysterious, just like bringing us a poetic sense of feeling.
