About The Artwork

Southwind is part of Paula McHugh’s series of paintings inspired by the titles of American and Celtic fiddle tunes and folk songs. This painting depicts a man playing the accordion on the grey streets of America as he recalls his home in Ireland. According to Donal O’Sullivan’s collection, “Songs of the Irish,” a homesick Donal MacNamara from County Mayo, Ireland, composed the beautiful waltz “Southwind” sometime during the 1700s. Alternative names for the tune are “An Ghaoth Aneas,” (Gaelic), “The Southern Breeze,” and “The Wind from the South.”
