About The Artwork

Large scale painting of a praying figure silhouetted by a bright mist of clouds. He carries a torch for perpetuity. "One of the logical problems of the idea of the Unconscious - Freud, Jung - is that it is and must be, by definition, "not in the sphere of consciousness." There's an easy semantic solution: "un-" has a special definition here that does not mean "not known." But for me it is precisely this breakdown in the language that gives it the ring of truth. There is s Night Language of dreams and terrors, vague pleasures and nostalgia, resistant to the logic of grammar and the defined corral of words. The Night Mare runs wild at times amidst what seems a storm of thought, but is also the motive force for the Big Work of our Being. Jung's Unconscious as the dark ocean, full of monsters, beautiful creatures, hidden reefs, mysterious islands. We are all in our little boats of Consciousness floating upon this unknowable ocean, our language one small net we have to capture a few strange creatures. There are larger nets able to catch larger fish. Painting, poetry, music. Harpoons, ropes, ships to pursue the ghosts of meaning that haunt and inform our lives." -B.Jones
