INSPIRATION; The painting was inspired by a photograph taken by Henri Cartier-Mason of Matisse in 1944 on a painting break holding his cat outside his studio in Nice, France. I HOPE VIEWERS are drawn first, as I was, to a single feature-the look on the faces of Matisse’s and his cat before enjoying the gestalt of the painting with all it's style complexities and sensuous colors. In addition to the portrait of Matisse, and the charming looks on his and his cat's face, I added another look-the one on the face of Matisse’s famous Fauvist painting Femme au Chapeau. I painted her looking out the studio window. I then added shadows cast by lookalikes of some of Matisse’s flying bird cutouts. I also exaggerated the colors and swirls created by the folds in Matisse's coat and trousers to give them the characteristics of curling pieces of cut paper. As simple as the feeling of love is, the painting itself is a complex painting which fuses three different styles of art: Fauvism; Matisse's cut outs ;and my own realistic Romantic painting technique. SHOP TALK; I chose acrylic pigment for it's versatility, i.e. it's quick drying for speed of layering and it's ability to be retarded so I can work wet on wet. The subject matter is love and universally appealing. I chose three different art styles (Fauvism, Matisse style cutouts and realistic/romantic rendering) in order to see if I could paint them in to a cohesive artistic whole.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
