'The Challenge' Painting

Many moons ago I created a very simple beautiful geometric drawing in conte crayon. I knew that this drawing existed, and came across it about 2 months ago reviewing my collection of artworks. I looked at it and said to myself this worked out in more complex line, shapes and textural designs would be a terrific challenge to undertake. As I made my first sketch of this drawing on a canvas 36” x 48”, I realized that to convert this into a painting would challenge my visual abilities and instincts to create a composition that would instead not be as simple but instead would transition into a complex visual work. This work involved my creating a combination of curvilinear and intersecting lines, a strong internal structure, a dynamic design, full with colors that were balanced and harmonious with values and shades and contrasts of cool and warm colors compartmentalized into the geometric composition with numerous tactile, textured surfaces that were rich with color, surface and direction. When I finished this painting after several months, I reviewed my process and realized that I met the challenge of recreating my ‘moons ago’ drawing into a fully worked out, powerful composition that respected the integrity of the earlier artwork.
