Just outside of Hilo and up a very steep twisty road that is worth the trip just to see the far view of the ocean behind you is Akaka Falls, a 450 foot drop through lava rock. "Akaka" in Hawaiian means, “rent, split, crack, scale.” The water here falls around 450 feet and sometimes is only mist before it reaches the bottom.
